I took a laptop to fifteen cafes in HSR Layout. Four of them are actually good.
I live in HSR Layout and I work out of cafes a lot. Over the last few months I’ve been treating that as a survey rather than a habit: open laptop, order coffee, try to get two hours of real work done, write down what happened.
Seventeen cafes on the list. Fifteen of them I actually worked in, one I walked out of before opening the laptop, one I still haven’t got to. Here’s the whole thing, then the short version of why.
The thing nobody tells you is that “good cafe” and “good cafe to work from” are almost unrelated categories. The prettiest rooms in HSR were the worst places to open a laptop. The places that got it right were, without exception, the ones that care about coffee first and interiors second.
The whole survey, in one picture
Every cafe I opened a laptop in, in the order I'd recommend them. Bars are my own ratings out of three — full bar is "great", empty track is "bad" or "none". Ordinal, not measured: I didn't run a speed test, I just tried to get work done. Marseli's wifi I never established, and the bottom two I never tested at all.
The table
Wifi, coffee and vibe are my own verdicts from actually sitting there with a laptop. Where I couldn’t test something, the cell says so instead of guessing.

The four I actually go back to
Daymonthyear, in Sector 2. Best combination on the list: the coffee is genuinely great, the wifi held up, and the room stays workable. This is the one I’d send someone to if they asked once and I only got one answer.
Tribes Coffee, Sector 3. Same tier. Their whole thing is coffee sourced straight from tribal growers — Araku, Koraput, Paderu — and it shows in the cup. The space is heavily designed — curved walls, murals, stone — which usually predicts a bad laptop experience, and here it somehow doesn’t.
Mara Coffee & Roasters in Sector 2 is my default. Great coffee, quiet street, park across the road. It fills up, so it’s a morning place rather than an afternoon one.
Mara in Sector 6 is the other Mara, and it’s a different experience: a large house rather than a cafe unit, so there’s actually room to spread out. Coffee is a notch below Sector 2 but the space is better if you need three hours and a table to yourself.
The good-not-great tier
Kathe would be in the top group on room alone — it’s the nicest space I sat in — but the portions are small enough that you notice. The Faith Cafe has the widest coffee menu of anywhere on this list and solid wifi; it’s an aesthetic-first white-interiors place that happens to work anyway. AÉK is new, cosy, small, and does the basics right. Beanlore is fine and clearly built for this, but everyone else has worked that out too, so you’re competing for tables.
Teatings is the odd one out: it’s a tea place, and I mostly drank tea, and it was good. Wifi works. Worth knowing if you don’t want four coffees in a day.
Katha Kavana has the wifi and the coffee, and then loses it on floor space. Small and congested, which is fine for an hour and not for a working afternoon.
Where it goes wrong
Paper & Pie is the frustrating one. It’s a bookstore cafe — Ink & Oak’s shop, opposite Sector 4 Park — the coffee is good, the room is lovely, and it has no wifi and no plug points. Which means it is a genuinely great place to read a book and a non-starter for work. I don’t think that’s an accident, and honestly, fair enough. Just don’t show up expecting to ship anything.
Nerlu is the near-miss. Nice room, decent coffee, multi-roaster menu that rotates every couple of weeks. The wifi was bad enough that I stopped trying.
Amintiri and Marseli are the two I’d actively steer you away from with a laptop. Both are good-looking rooms in the Instagram sense. Amintiri had no usable wifi and coffee I didn’t finish. Marseli I never even got as far as testing the wifi, because the room made it clear it wasn’t that kind of place. Both are restaurants that look like cafes.
Yummy Bee is OK at everything, which is its own kind of verdict.
Two I can’t call
Karadi Coffee in Sector 7 — I went, the drink wasn’t good, and I never opened the laptop. So I have half a data point and I’m not going to pretend it’s a review.
Big Bean Cafe in Sector 2 I simply haven’t been to yet. It’s the next one on the list.
The pattern
Fifteen working sessions and the correlation is embarrassingly clean: the places that describe themselves by their coffee are the places you can work in, and the places that describe themselves by their interiors are not. Mara, Tribes, Daymonthyear, Kathe, AÉK — all roaster-led, all fine. Amintiri and Marseli lead with the room, and the room is where it ends.
The two hard failure modes, in order of how much they ruin your afternoon:
- No plug points. A cafe can have perfect wifi and still be a 90-minute cafe. Paper & Pie is the clearest case.
- No room. Katha Kavana and AÉK both do everything right and are still small. If the place has eight tables, you’re gambling.
Wifi is third, which surprised me. Almost everywhere now has working wifi, and where it fails — Nerlu — it fails badly enough that no amount of good coffee saves it.
If you’re working from HSR and want one answer: Mara Sector 2 in the morning, Daymonthyear when you want the coffee to be the point.
